Walter "Butch" Clifton Fortner

Pembroke-  Walter “Butch” Clifton Fortner, age 72 passed away peacefully at home while surrounded by his family on Sunday, October 30, 2022 and entered into his eternal heavenly rest.  Butch was born in Savannah, Georgia to the late Elry Lott Fortner and Marie Louise Perry Fortner.  He grew up in Savannah and graduated in 1968 from Groves High School.  He served in the Air National Guard for six years and worked at Kenan Advantage Group for over 23 years,  first as a tanker driver and then as terminal manager at the Savannah location.  Butch was forced into early retirement by his cancer diagnosis.

Butch loved watching college football, fishing and gardening.  Butch was a avid golfer and won numerous tournaments playing pool and throwing darts.  Family was of the utmost importance to him.  He was always there to help both friend and family alike.  Butch would work on vehicles or lend a hand in any way that he could.  He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and a great friend to all he knew.

Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Rebecca “Becky” Amelsberg Fortner of Pembroke; children, Craig Clifton Fortner and Kimberly Fountain of Ellabell; Julie Anne Fortner Davis of Pembroke; Dawn Michelle Fortner Griffin and Rob Griffin of Guyton; Ian and Sarah Bragg of Guyton and Wesley and Elizabeth Bragg of Pembroke; 11 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held 11 A.M. Wednesday, November 2, 2022 in the chapel of Flanders Powell Funeral Home with long-time family friend, Rev. Kenny Harrelson officiating.

The Fortner family would like to extend a special thanks to the nurses and staff of Ogeechee Area Hospice for their compassion, care and support during Butch’s last days.
