Black Creek

Beulah Virginia Hendry Lee, age 86, passed peacefully into eternal rest on Friday, June 2, 2017. She was comforted at her bed side by her loving family as she slipped from this world into heaven’s glory. Virginia was born on January 15, 1931 in Liberty County, GA to Frank and Mary Lee Hendry. She had eleven brothers and sisters, two of whom died as infants. Her family moved to Bryan County from the Willie area of Liberty County in the early 1940’s when the Ft. Stewart Military Base was established. They settled in the Black Creek Community when Virginia’s parents bought a small 100 acre farm. Virginia grew up happy and healthy and worked along with her siblings helping her parents with farm life. Virginia met the love of her life as a teenager. She married Hubert Roscoe Lee on February 24, 1947, and they enjoyed 55 happy years of marriage before Hubert passed away in 2002. Hubert and Virginia chose to settle in the Black Creek Community and raise their family. They purchased their home from Don and Georgia Brown and remained there, living next door to Virginia’s parents. Virginia was the beloved mother of three children: A son, Anthony Hubert Lee and two daughters, Glennis Virginia Lee Powers and Iris Michelle Lee Sims. Virginia spent her life as a devoted wife, mother and friend, always helping others in any way she could. She loved people and had a servant’s heart. She believed in helping others as much as she could, as often as she could, and with a kind, loving spirit. Virginia’s life was a living example of her favorite Bible verse, Ephesians 4:32: “And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgives you in Christ.” Virginia found joy in the living of life and truly knew the importance of loving and serving others. She also showed her love to everyone with her gift of excellent cooking. Virginia prepared weekly meals for her family until her health declined. She loved having dinner parties for friends and made fabulous dishes that satisfied the soul because everything was made with love. She was known for her delicious potato salad and scrumptious sour cream pound cakes. Virginia was a saved, redeemed Child of God and a faithful, lifelong member of the Ellabell United Methodist Church. She held many offices in the church and served wherever she was needed. She was a member of the Inez Smith Sunday School Class and both church circles as well as the United Methodist Women. Her dedication to her church was only eclipsed by her dedication to her Savior. Virginia loved singing and was a loyal choir member throughout most of her adult life. When her children grew up, Virginia worked briefly as an accounts clerk for L.B. Price Mercantile Company in Savannah and later as a paraprofessional at Lanier Primary School in Pembroke. Her hobbies included reading, watching cooking shows on TV, and traveling. Virginia enjoyed flower gardening and was a member of the Pembroke Garden Club. Virginia loved to shop with her daughter and granddaughters and in fact, passed “the shopping gene” on to them.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, ten siblings, her husband Hubert, and daughter and son-in-law Glennis and Don Powers.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Anthony and Betty Lee of Lanier and her daughter and son-in-law, Iris and Dale Sims of Black Creek. Virginia was known as Nana to her grandchildren: Cheri and Mark Alderman, Julie and Garrett Shurling, Wendy Sims, Dustin and Kristin Sims, Devin and Justin Cameron, and Donald Stephen Powers. Virginia was also blessed with seven great-grandchildren in whom she delighted: Lorin, Eleana, and Emmett Alderman, Madelyn and Rett Shurling, and Brantlee and Bradlee Cameron. Virginia also leaves behind a sister, Glenda Hendry Carter and many nieces, nephews, cousins. Truly this Christian mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother created a lifetime of joy and happiness with her family and leaves behind precious memories and a legacy of love for her family to cherish.

Visitation will be held 6:00pm-9:00pm on Tuesday, June 6 at Flanders-Morrison Funeral Home in Pembroke, Georgia.

Please join the family at the funeral service the following day on Wednesday, June 7 at 11:00am at the Ellabell United Methodist Church in Ellabell, Georgia.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the ICU Nurses at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Dr. James Meadows, and Dr. John Rathbun for the excellent care they provided Virginia in her final days.
