Vergie Barnard

Mrs. Vergie Sutton Barnard, age 92, passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital on Saturday, February 11, 2023. Mrs. Barnard was born in Pembroke at the old hospital that was located on West Bacon Street on January 17, 1931 to the late Troy M. Sutton and Lucy Bell Sutton. She was employed for over 30 years with USDA-ASCS and was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church of Pembroke. Mrs. Barnard enjoyed writing poetry, completing cross word puzzles, making homemade barbeque sauce and spending time with her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Dannie Calvin Barnard, Sr;  son, Dannie Calvin Barnard, Jr.; daughter, Elaine B. Seay; three brothers, Troy F. Sutton, Lloyd Sutton and Samuel Sutton; sister, Margaret Sutton Washburn and granddaughter, Erica E. Martin.

Survivors include her daughter, Terry Leslie Barnard of Pembroke; brother, Norman E. Sutton and his wife Jo of Lyons; two sisters, Evelyn S. Barone of Pembroke and Essie S. DeLoach and her husband Ronald of Ellabell; four grandchildren, Brook Martin and her husband Scott of Pembroke, Amber Turner and her husband Justin of Hahira, GA, Lindsay Miller and her husband Elmer of Brooklet and Brett Barnard and his wife Lindsay of Clyo and 10 great grandchildren.

Family will receive friends from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 18, 2023 at Flanders Powell Funeral Home.

Memorial service will follow in the Flanders Powell Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Albert Hill officiating.

Burial will be private.
