Pembroke

Pembroke-Mr. Stephen Richard Nolan, age 74 of Pembroke passed away Monday morning at the Candler/St. Joseph’s ICU.  Steve had been fighting stage four Cancer for two years.  He is survived by his wife, Margaret “Peggy” Ann McDaniel Nolan and his sister Marjorie Bacon Nolan Wilson, his nephews Brian Nolan Wilson, Dr. James Michael Wilson and Edward “Ed” Francis Nolan, his first cousins Eric Brannen, Sharon Brannen Vaughn, Andrea Brannen, Woodrow Wilson Pickett, and a close friend of his family, Paco Wallette.

Like many military wives during WWII, his mother returned home to Pembroke to her mother’s to have her babies. Sarah Clanton Bacon and John Gordon Bacon raised their three daughters—Dorothy May, Marjorie Florence, and Norma Louise, and their son, John Gordon in this home.  All three children of Marjorie--Edward, Stephen, and Marjorie were transported from this home to be born in Statesboro.  Marjorie brought her family home when Eddie was stationed abroad for WWII, Korea and Greenland.  She also returned for Christmas and summer vacations.  Because of this Steve always felt that he really grew up in Pembroke.  Steve lived his last 20 years in the family home, initially taking care of his father, Edward Francis Nolan.

Steve enlisted in the Navy after high School.  He served as a Radio Operator based out of Hawaii during the Vietnam War.  During this time Steve learned to tinker and fix electronic machines.  After his service he graduated from Brewton Parker College.   This is where Steve met his future wife, Peggy who was born in Toombs County and grew up in Montgomery County.  Steve also graduated Magna Cum Laude from Georgia Southwestern College with a Business Degree. After graduation he began working at the Georgia Ports Authority.  When his brother Edward moved to Pembroke, they formed a partnership and opened the Electric Shack. Radio Shack sued them over the name, so the brothers tweaked the name to S and Electronic and continued the business. Mr. Nolan was a 50-year resident of Pembroke and loved his community.  He was a former member of the Bryan County Industrial Authority, was past president of North Bryan County Chamber of Commerce and served as chairman for the Pembroke Balloon Festival. Steve was persistent and continued his business and his service to his community until his cancer diagnosis two years ago.

Steve was proud of the small-town close-knit family and friends’ relationships in Pembroke.  He walked next door to the church every Sunday until the cancer prevented him.

Memorial service will be held 1 P.M. Saturday, September 11, 2021 at Northside Cemetery with Dr. Jim Correll officiating.
