Rufus James Smallwood, Sr.

Stilson-  Rufus James Smallwood, Sr., age 90 passed away Saturday, July 23, 2022 at his home.  Mr. Smallwood was born in Emanuel County to the late Will Smallwood and Claudine Hackle Williams.  Mr. Smallwood was a veteran of the United States Army and was a sharp shooter in the Korean War.  He later became an auto body technician and served over 25 years at Dan Vaden Chevrolet. Mr. Smallwood was an excellent marksman and won two championship turkey shoots throughout the southeastern United States.  He raced dragsters and motorcycles; loved to hunt and fish and enjoyed keeping his vegetable garden.

Survivors include wife of 68 years, Gail Braswell Smallwood of Stilson; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Deborah and Wayne Johnson of Stilson, Teresa and Phil Heyne of Mocksville, NC and Diane Carter of Stilson;  one son, Rufus James Smallwood, Jr. and his wife, Sabrina of Orlando, FL; one sister, Sarah Messex of Pembroke and 10 grandchildren.

Visitation will be held 5-7 P.M. Tuesday, July 26, 2022 at Flanders Powell Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be held 7 P.M. Tuesday, July 26, 2022 in the chapel of Flanders Powell Funeral Home with Rev. Darnell Barner officiating.
