Pembroke- Mr. Charles Ray Jones, age 90, passed away Sunday, August 9, 2015 while under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. Mr. Jones was a veteran of both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Air Force. While in the Navy, Mr. Jones fought in WWII as a gunner’s mate on an the USS LST6 landing craft. He was involved in the liberation of Italy and was part of the amphibious landing operations at historic Normandy Beach. Toward the end of the war, his ship was torpedoed and he spent several hours floating in the frigid waters of the English Channel. Mr. Jones fought in the Korean War and finished his 20 years of service in the Air Force. He later worked with civil service maintaining the RADAR systems at both Hunter Army Air Field and Fort Stewart. After retirement, he enjoyed farming and planting numerous acres of pines. Mr. Jones was a former member of the Pembroke Lions Club and a long-time member of Pembroke United Methodist Church.
Surivors include his wife of 64 years, Clarice Mason Jones of Pembroke; daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Dr. Perry Santos of Edmond, OK; sons and daughters-in-law, Charles Jones and Tanya Boyd-Jones of Tignall, Sidney and Beatrice Jones, Joseph and Donna Jones, and Benjamin Jones, all of Pembroke; Jay and Cherry Sapp of Jacksonville and Timothy Sapp of Savannah. He is additionally survived by eight grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 10-11 A.M. Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2015 at Pembroke United Methodist Church. Funeral Service will be at 11 A.M. Tuesday at the church with Rev. Matt Avera officiating. Interment will follow in Northside Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Pembroke United Methodist Church, Ogeechee Area Hospice or the charity of your choice. Flanders Morrison Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
