Hiltonia- Ralph D. Akins, age 76 passed away Friday, February 18, 2022 at his home in Hiltonia. Mr. Akins was born April 6, 1945 to the late Lewis I. Akins and Myrtle L. Gibson Akins. He was a 1963 graduate of Bryan County High School and was co-captain of the Bryan County Redskins Basketball Team. Mr. Akins was an excellent basketball player and lettered all four years of high school. He later served in the U.S. Air Force and worked at Union Camp and the Savannah Morning News. He loved tending to his vegetable garden, was an avid fisherman and history buff and was a wonder storyteller. In addition to his parents, Mr. Akins was preceded in death by three brothers, Larry Akins, Ray Akins and Bill Akins and one grandson, Lincoln Drew.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Stepanie and Tony Thomas of Greenville, SC and Beverly Gayle Drew and Justin Drew of Brooksville, FL; one brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Claudette Akins of Lee’s Summitt, MO; and three grandchildren, Christopher Haley Wood, Jacob Wood and Morgan Thomas.
Visitation will be held 10 -11 A.M. Thursday, February 24, 2022 at the funeral home.
A memorial service will follow at 11 A.M. Thursday, February 24, 2022 in the chapel of Flanders Powell Funeral Home with military honors. Interment will be private.
