Ellabell-Mr. Harry Olan Bacon, Sr. age 83 passed away Monday, October 13, 2014 at St. Joseph’s Hospital after an extended illness. Mr. Bacon was a native of Bryan County and a long-time resident of Ellabell. He traveled extensively during his 21 years of service in the U.S. Navy. He served during both the Vietnam War and the Korean War. He later retired as supervisor of the post exchange on Hunter Army Airfield. Mr. Bacon was a founding member, CEO, treasurer and Sunday School teacher at the Church of Christ at Ellabell. He was involved in every facet of his church. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, yard work and was an avid sports fan. Mr. Bacon was predeceased by his parents, Oscar and Dorothy Bacon and his brother Russell Bacon.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Mary Belva Bacon of Ellabell; one son and daughter-in-law, Olan and Margaret Bacon, Jr. of Ellabell; three daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Alan Greenwell, Teresa and Mark Callaway and Leslie and Jay Williams all of Ellabell; brothers Roscoe, Felton and Larry Bacon; one sister, Doris McCoy; grandchildren, Kelly, Kevin, Shawn, Kasey, Scott, Zachary, Kristin, and Allison; seven great grandchildren; one great great grandson; and the family dog, Lillie.
Visitation will be 1-3 P.M. Friday, October 17, 2014 at the funeral home. Funeral service will be 3 P.M. Friday, October 17, 2014 in the chapel of Flanders Morrison Funeral Home with Dr. Joe Holloway, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in First Baptist Church of Ellabell Cemetery with military honors.
