Bloomingdale- Helen R. Townsend, age 89, passed away on July 29, 2013 at Hospice Savannah. Mrs. Townsend was a homemaker for many years and returned to school to further her education becoming a nurse. She worked at Maxwell Air Force Base Hospital in Montgomery, Alabama until her retirement. Helen moved to Bloomingdale, Georgia where she lived for the last fifteen years. Her primary commitment in life was to her children and their families. She was preceded in death by her mother, Eunice Louise Smiley, her father J. Roberts, her brother, J.T. Roberts and a grandchild, Michael Shea Dickerson.
She is survived by her children, Waymond (Ann) Townsend of Savannah; Monica (Everett "Cracker") Stokes of Savannah; Deborah (Larry) Ketchum of Pelham, AL; and Darrell (Pam) Townsend of Pooler; a sister, Katherine "Kitty" Battistella of Montgomery, AL; nine grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held 9-11 A.M. Friday, August 2, 2013 at Sand Hill Baptist Church. Funeral service will be 11 A.M. Friday, August 2, 2013 also at Sand Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Royce Hendry officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family would like to thank the doctors and staff of Compassionate Care Hospice and Hospice Savannah for their care and support during Mrs. Townsend's illness. Remembrances can be made to Compassionate Care Hospice in Pooler, Hospice Savannah, or Sand Hill Baptist Church. Flanders Morrison Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
