Mrs. Montene S. Cowart

Mrs. Montene S. Cowart, age 86, passed away at her residence on Saturday, September 23, 2023. Mrs. Cowart was born in Bryan County to the late Dennis Gordon Smith and Zelma Mason Smith on January 12, 1937. She was a member of Grace Independent Methodist Church and Past President of Alee Patrol Ladies Auxiliary and Bryan County Shrine Club Ladies Auxiliary. Mrs. Cowart enjoyed gardening, yard work, crocheting, cooking and spending time with her family.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, C.E. “Gene” Cowart; daughter, Teressa Cowart Sanders, brother, Artie Smith and two sisters, Elise Cribbs and Elvie Owens.

Survivors include two sons, Steven Cowart (Crystal) and Mark Cowart (Jolene) all of Ellabell; daughter, Diane Lightsey (Nelson) of Statesboro; sister, Annette Butler of Pembroke; eight grandchildren, Abby Hunt (Jason), Shera Waters (Mark), Jameson Lightsey (Diana), Jeremy Cowart, Justin Cowart (Jennifer), Shae McDaniel (Charles), Christen Morris (Gary) and Brad Cowart (Katy); 22 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 26, 2023 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Flanders Powell Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 27, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. in the Flanders Powell Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Dan Bryant officiating.

Burial will be held at Northside Cemetery.
