Martha Pulliam

October 31, 1937 — January 27, 2023

Newnan

Mrs. Martha Ann Brewton Pulliam died on January 27, 2023, at Wesley Woods in Newnan Georgia. She was born on October 31, 1937, in Savannah, GA, the daughter of Ben Grady Brewton and Bessie Mae Edwards Brewton. She is predeceased by her husband, Dr. Robert Pulliam. She is survived by her two sons Robert L. Pulliam, Jr, of Newnan and Mark Alexander Pulliam of Atlanta along with her sister Doris Anderson and Ben Brewton and their children.

She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education in 1959 from the Georgia State College for Women. After establishing herself as a successful educator, she and Bob devoted the rest of their lives to improving mental health in the state of Georgia. Eventually Bob became the CEO of Rome Regional Hospital where together they made enormous contributions to Rome and the entire state of Georgia.

Martha was the first woman to serve as a Deacon in the First Baptist Church of Rome. She worked alongside Rosalynn Carter to improve awareness of mental health in Georgia and was an active member and president of the Garden Club of Rome.

Martha was truly a lady of Southern culture and manners, genuinely loved by everyone who knew her. Her deep faith carried her through good times and bad, and all her caregivers at Wesley Woods loved to take care of “Miss Martha.”

Graveside service was held at Northside Cemetery.
