Mr. John Ora Shuman, age 96, passed away on Monday, July 25, 2022 at Community Hospice of Vidalia. Mr. Shuman was born in Statesboro on September 12, 1925 to the late William Henry and Lula Beatrice Morris Shuman. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII with the famed Blue Devils of the 88th Infantry Division in Italy where he was awarded the Purple Heart from injuries sustained in combat. He later worked for many years as a truck driver with Sunbeam before his retirement. Mr. Shuman was a member of Lawrence Baptist Church and the Pembroke Masonic Lodge #469 F&AM and he was an excellent gardener.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by four sons, Johnny Karl Shuman, Jerry Shuman, Kenny Shuman and Michael Shuman; daughter, Karen Shuman and brothers, William Perry “Pat” Shuman and Wilbert Shuman and sisters, Mamie Shuman Long and Geraldine Shuman Key.
Survivors include five grandchildren, Craig Shuman and his wife Brandy of Pembroke, Jennifer Shuman of Elizabethton, TN, William Perry Davis of Savannah, Brian Shuman and his wife Michelle of Rincon and Krystal Ragone of Mims, FL and niece, Sheila Pollett and her husband David of Pembroke.
Memorial service will be held at Lawrence Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 11, 2022 with Reverend Don Combs officiating.
Burial will follow at the Lawrence Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors.
