James Harry Lewis, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and devoted servant of Christ, passed away Sunday, March 9, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of faith, dedication, and love. Born on August 7, 1937, in Claxton, Georgia, he was the eldest son of Austin and OraNell Sapp Lewis
Harry graduated from Claxton High School in 1955 and soon after answered the call to serve his country. He proudly served in the Georgia 165th National Guard for eight years, beginning in 1958.
On June 29, 1958, Harry married the love of his life, Mary Ella Miles, at First Baptist Church in Pembroke, Georgia. Their wedding was made even more special as it was a double ceremony with Mary Ella’s twin sister, Lila Evelyn Miles, and Durwood Lamont Blocker. Together, Harry and Mary Ella built a life centered around faith and family, raising two wonderful sons, Daniel Mark Lewis and Michael Scott Lewis.
Harry devoted 38 years of his career to serving others in the Life Insurance industry, working faithfully from 1961 until his retirement in 1999. However, his true calling in life was his relationship with Jesus Christ, which became the cornerstone of his life when he placed his faith in the Lord at Northside Baptist Church in Columbia, SC, in 1972. The impact of a small group teacher led him to salvation at the age of 35.
His faith was evident in the many ways he served the church and his community. He was a dedicated deacon, an adult Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church in Richmond Hill, GA, an usher, and a faithful servant on various committees at First Baptist Church in Pembroke, GA.
Harry’s greatest joy was his family, which continued to grow over the years. He was a proud grandfather to six grandchildren: Austin Lewis (Jayce), Demerie Lewis, Dylan Lewis, Charity Lewis, Faith (Conner) Norton, and Hope (Aaron) Robinson. His legacy extended further with four great-grandchildren: Ruth and Esther Ella Robinson, and Taryn and Oliver Lewis.
A man of unwavering faith, integrity, and kindness, Harry Lewis touched countless lives through his love, wisdom, and devotion. Though he is no longer with us, his impact will be felt for generations to come.
A service celebrating his life will take place at First Baptist Church of Pembroke on Thursday, March 13th, at 11:00 a.m.
Visitation will be held at Flanders Powell Funeral Home on Wednesday from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. The family warmly welcomes friends and loved ones to join them in honoring a life well-lived and a soul now rejoicing in the presence of the Lord.
