James Lawrence Johnson

Mr. James Lawrence Johnson, age 82, passed away on Thursday, July 4, 2024, at Effingham Care and Rehabilitation Center. Mr. Johnson was born in Savannah to the late Elijah T. Johnson and Mamie Louise Mock Johnson on March 29, 1942. He was a member of Sand Hill Baptist Church and enjoyed fishing, woodworking, and singing. Mr. Johnson was a member of Local 474 IUOE and worked as a heavy equipment operator.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers, Calvin Elijah Johnson and Homer Ray Johnson and four sisters, Gladys Seigler, Emily Josephine Green, Betty Johnson and Elizabeth Johnson, also his son-in-law Michael Mallard. 

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Cheryl Jeannine Anderson Johnson; two sons, Samuel (Christine) Johnson and Chris (Lisa) Johnson of Guyton; two daughters, Shirley Mallard of Savannah and Cindy Koffroth of Guyton; brother, Michael (Charlotte) Johnson of Rincon; two sisters, Mary (Gunny) Prescott of Guyton and Barbara Burke of Rincon, and 15 grandchildren: Grayson Carpenter (Nancy), Corbin Carpenter, Jordan Mallard, Caitlin Mallard, Kali Koffroth (Quinn), Kevin Koffroth, Joel (Adrionnah) Johnson, Carly Johnson (Patrick), Zachary Johnson, Kinsley Johnson, Kaela Johnson, Elijah Johnson, Christian Johnson, Mitchell Tillman and Tyler (Tayler) Tillman and three great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Monday, July 8, 2024, from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at Sand Hill Baptist Church.

Funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Lelon Jeffers and Reverend Derward Poole officiating.

Burial will be held in the Sand Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
