Harold Douglas "Son" Bacon

Pembroke

Mr. Harold Douglas “Son” Bacon, 86, passed away Friday, February 26, 2021, after an extended illness.  Mr. Bacon was born in the Bacontown area of the Fort Stewart Military Reservation near Pembroke.  He was a 1950 graduate of Bryan County High School.  Mr. Bacon loved to hunt, fish, and shrimp in his younger days.  He enjoyed nature and gardening.

After high school, Mr. Bacon enlisted in the United States Air Force during the Korean War where he served eight years and attained the rank of Sergeant.  He was stationed in France, Goose Bay Labrador, and throughout the US.  He enjoyed his time in the military and supporting this great nation.

He married his high school classmate, Mary Frances “Freda” Bacon on July 5, 1963 and they had one son, Douglas Paine Bacon born in 1973.  He loved his family dearly.

Mr. Bacon worked for Independent Life and Accident Insurance Company while starting a small country grocery store in the Bacontown area.  He later owned and operated many businesses in North Bryan County over 45 years including Bacon’s Supermarket, Bacon’s Feed & Seed, Bacon’s Laundromat and Western Auto.

He continued to serve his community as a member of the City of Pembroke Downtown Development Authority and was elected to serve as Bryan County Commissioner from 1985 to 1992 where he saw expansion of the library and courthouse in Pembroke, and organizing of the North Bryan County Fire Department.

Most importantly, Mr. Bacon loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  He became a member of the Pembroke Christian Church in 1945 where he served as Deacon, Elder, and teacher of the Adult Sunday School class.  In addition, he also served as Chairman of the Board of the Church for 16 consecutive years.  Mr. Bacon was a founding member and Treasurer of the Pembroke Ministerial Association and helped hundreds of indigent and destitute people in the community.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Grady and Eunice Bacon, his step-mother, Annie Lee Bacon, his wife of 54 years, Freda Bacon, sisters Shirley Bacon, Ellen Fiveash, Patricia Waters, and Florene Wetherington.

Survivors include:  Son and daughter-in-law, Douglas Paine and Toni Bacon; grandchildren, Lauren Martin and William Bacon; brothers, Perry Bacon (Marie), Stanley Bacon (Kathy), Raymond Bacon (Annette) and Roy Bacon (Carol); sisters Margaret Howell, Brenda Morgan, June Copi (Ken), Frances Frost and Karen Bacon; brother-in-laws Fred Paine and Johnny Tuten; many nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to two angels, his nurse Wendy and caregiver Debi.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 28, 2021 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at Flanders Powell Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be held on Monday, March 1, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Jim Sullivan and Reverend Charles Fiveash officiating.

Burial will follow at Northside Cemetery.
