Evelyn Sims Stubbs, 86, died on September 5, 2015 at Treasure Coast Hospice in Stuart, Florida, surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Evelyn was born on August 6, 1929, to Clark Sims and Nita Sims in Pembroke, GA. Evelyn was a former longtime resident of Fort Myers, Florida where she was an active member of the Jasmine Garden Club and Cypress Lakes United Methodist Church. Evelyn was a competitive ballroom dancer and won many medals. She was Miss Bryan County, Georgia in 1947. In later years she enjoyed watching the food channel and playing bingo and Chinese checkers. Evelyn played Chinese checkers as a child with her grandmother in Pembroke and enjoyed playing that game with her grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Evelyn attended Montreat College in Montreat, North Carolina, and Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia where she majored in music (piano). She taught elementary school in Pembroke, Georgia before retiring to raise her children.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Deborah Ann Stubbs.
Evelyn is survived by her three children, Jane Stubbs Hunston (Jay) of Stuart, Florida, Rex E. Stubbs, Jr. (Karen) of Fort Myers, Florida, and Laurie Ruth Leon (Stephen) of Brandon, Florida; brothers, Norton Sims (Judy) of Fort Myers, Florida and Graham Sims (Curtis Ann) of Columbus, Georgia and her sister, Ramona Boatright (Gene) of Sylvester, Georgia; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 10 AM until 11 AM on Saturday, September 12, 2015 at Flanders Morrison Funeral Home in Pembroke, Georgia.
A graveside service will follow at Northside Cemetery, Pembroke, Georgia.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in Evelyn’s memory to the American Stroke Association.
