C. Norton Sims, MD died December 6, 2022. Dr Sims, was born February 11, 1937, with his identical twin Graham Sims, to Elnita Tippett Sims and Clark Madison Sims in Savannah Georgia. They grew up in Pembroke, Georgia with brother and sisters Harold, Evelyn and Ramona. He was a high school basketball guard, and a champion feather-weight wrestler in college. Dr Sims was a graduate of Georgia Military Academy, Emory University, and Medical College of Georgia. He served two years as a medical officer in the United States Air Force before entering a four-year Ophthalmology Residency at Louisville School of Medicine. Norton married Judith Strickland Sims in 1963 and was proud of their sons: Clark Norton Sims, James Graham Sims, and Jonathan Tippett Sims, MD.
Dr Sims began his Fort Myers, Florida Ophthalmology practice in July 1969. He was passionate about giving his patients the best vision they could achieve, and about early detection of Macular Degeneration and early identification of those susceptible to Macular Degeneration. This resulted in eight patents, much research, and many presentations at medical meetings. While focusing on his practice and research, he always maintained a youthful sense of humor. After 51 years, he retired in July 2020. When asked why he didn’t retire earlier, he said, “I loved my work and enjoyed my patients.” He also loved freshwater fishing and being with his family and friends.
