Mr. Charles Eugene (Gene) Sanders, age 88, passed away on Wednesday, January 24, 2024 at Camelia Health and Rehab. Mr. Sanders was born in Pembroke to the late Henry McCleland Sanders and Claudia Hood Sanders on June 2, 1935. He was a 1954 graduate of Bryan County High School and a 1959 graduate of the Georgia Teacher’s College with a degree in business and served as well in the Georgia National Guard. He was a longtime member of Grace Church where he sang in the choir for 70 years and was an Administrative Board Chairman for 20 years. He was also a member of the Helen De La Hunt Sunday School Class. Mr. Sanders enjoyed singing, listening to music, taking walks and reading. He was employed with Borden Dairy Company for 10 years then worked for Starland Dairy for 16 years and then was the controller with Guerry Lumber Company for 18 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Elbert Sanders, Marion Sanders, Jimmie Sanders and Robert Sanders.
Survivors include his loving wife of 58 years, Anne L. Sanders; son, Glenn Eugene Sanders of Savannah; daughter, Beth McCoy and her husband Keith of Pembroke; two grandchildren, Dylan McCoy and his wife CaraBeth and Cassie McCoy; great granddaughter, Brooklyn McCoy and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 28, 2023 from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. at Grace Church.
Funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m. with Reverend Dan Bryant officiating.
Burial will be held at Northside Cemetery.
