PEMBROKE: Bonnie Kay Bazemore Hughes passed away on January 2, 2025 after a short illness. Mrs. Hughes was born on January 14, 1953 in Savannah to Hawley Theodore Bazemore and Bessie Clanton Bazemore. She was married to the love of her life, Robert T. Hughes, for nearly 50 years prior to his death in 2022. She leaves a legacy of love and devotion for her family, friends and community. Mrs. Hughes was a gifted teacher, administrator and community advocate. She began her career as a middle school teacher and went on to serve as assistant principal and principal at Bryan County Middle School and principal of Bryan County High School. After retirement, she enjoyed serving in various capacities for the City of Pembroke. Nearest and dearest to her heart were her children and grandchildren, who affectionately referred to her as 'KK'. Mrs. Hughes brought light and laughter to anyone in her path, and she always had a listening ear and encouraging words. She instilled a sense of belonging in others and was a respected mentor and colleague. She was a beloved and cherished daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, niece, aunt, cousin and friend. She will be dearly missed. 

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Hughes is predeceased by her brother, Randall H. Bazemore and sister-in-law, Jan Sasser Bazemore. She is survived by her children and grandchildren: son, Joseph Theron Hughes, and granddaughter, Savana Kay Hughes, daughter and son-in-law, Melissa Kay Hughes Shuman and Joseph David Shuman, and grandson, Joseph Grant Shuman. She is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Brenda and Milton Smith. 

Visitation will be held from noon - 2 p.m., Wednesday, January 8, 2025 at Flanders Powell Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Wednesday, January 8, 2025 in the Flanders Powell Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Lawrence Butler officiating. Interment will follow at Northside Cemetery.
